Andrea Horwath notes that the Liberal government is refusing to support her call for an inquest into deaths by suicide at the St. Joseph’s Healthcare psychiatric hospital on the west mountain.

The Hamilton Centre MPP says there have been 11 such deaths at that hospital in the past 18 months.

Speaking during question period in the Legislature, Horwath stressed that families of loved ones who need mental health care should expect them to be given “every chance at recovery.”

When that doesn’t happen, she adds that “families deserve answers.”

Health Minister Eric Hoskins said the question of an inquest is “entirely at the discretion” of Ontario’s coroner who operates independently of the government.
