Scott Thompson: Are you tired of the Beer Store/LCBO monopoly?

Customer service, if we don’t get it, we take our business somewhere else.

Unless it’s the foreign-owned, union-controlled, monopoly known as the Beer Store.

I followed an elderly gentleman into the Beer Store on Thursday who had eight cases of empty cans, all of the same brand that he had obviously sorted and put back into the correct boxes, for a speedy return.

There were only two of us in the store at the time.

The daily email you need for 's top news stories.

Instead of merely counting the man’s empties and completing his order, we had to wait while the Beer Store employee took each case to the back, one at a time.

He would then empty the cans into a bin, break up the boxes, and then return to the cashier stand and do the same until all eight cases had been processed taking several minutes.

I asked another employee, why doesn’t he just give the guy his order and do this after the transaction is complete.

The other employee said there isn’t enough staff for that.

I politely said, there is no one else in the store other than the four of us, and he wasn’t doing anything.

As I left, the one employee said the other “pissed off customer”.

Yes, correct.

The problem is, no one cares in this monopoly that doesn’t have to answer to anyone about customer service.

Another reason why Ontarians have had enough of the Beer Store and the LCBO.
