RM of Buckland closes road to deter petty criminals

A rural municipality in Saskatchewan has closed a road that officials say was being used as a staging area by petty criminals.

Don Fyrk, reeve of the RM of Buckland, just west of Prince Albert, said posts have been installed to prevent vehicles from travelling down a section of Peter Pond Road, not far from the North Saskatchewan River.

Fyrk said thieves and prostitutes have used the spot as a temporary hideout and items such as needles, condoms and other litter have been found along the roadway.

He noted that area residents have noticed a significant drop-off in criminal activity since the closure.

Fyrk is encouraging other municipalities to take similar action if complaints surface about certain locations becoming hot-spots for criminals.
