The Canadian government has committed to an aid package of $160,000 towards relief efforts in Caribbean countries, which suffered catastrophic damage at the hands of Hurricane Irma.
In a statement, Global Affairs said Canada will contribute $100,000 to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, as well as an additional $60,000 to support medical charities in the region.

Canada will also send an expert to help the UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team as it works to size up the damage and coordinate relief efforts in the region.
“The government of Canada is concerned by the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma and expresses its condolences to all the people that have been affected,” International Development Minister Marie-Claide Bibeau said in a statement.

Bibeau added that Global Affairs will continue monitoring the situation in the Caribbean, “and will continue to respond as needed and appropriate.”
Hurricane Irma claimed 23 lives as it barreled through the Caribbean. It is expected to make landfall in the Florida peninsula Sunday morning.
