Harjit Sajjan, who was speaking on behalf of Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan, said the money is going towards “fundamental” research.

The money will be distributed through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) 2017 competition for the Discovery Grants Program, scholarships and fellowships, said a news release.

“We are investing over $42 million into scientists, engineers and students who are at the very heart of Canadian discovery and innovation,” Sajjan said.

He said the federal funding means more jobs and opportunities for skills training.

The funding comes as part of $515 million in spending that was announced earlier on Friday.
