RCMP investigated the case of animal cruelty and arrested an 18-year-old man from Easterville, Man. who was later sentenced and spent six months behind bars and is now under a two year supervised probation.

Asha had lost the use of her back legs and suffered spinal injuries following the brutal violence.

Manitoba Underdogs Rescue, a local animal rescue organization, picked Asha up soon after and supported her, nursing her back to health.

Chantalle Gauthier is a volunteer with the rescue group and a dog lover herself. She said the solution was simple for her and she chose to foster Asha until she could hopefully become hers one day.

“She’s come a long way; she’s fine. I don’t think she has any recollection of it whatsoever,” Gauthier said.

Gauthier said Asha has a furry sibling named Shimmer and two owners who love her and plan to keep her safe forever.

As for the 18-year-old who brutally harmed Asha, he may be out now, but Gauthier said that doesn’t worry her and she’s quite happy a new precedent was set around charges for animal cruelty following what happened to Asha.

“Usually nothing really happens except for a slap on a wrist. So, for him to have received jail time is a huge step, a huge announcement that it’s not being tolerated,” Gauthier said.
