RCMP now investigating suspicious items found in West Kelowna storage locker

RCMP look into suspicious packages in West Kelowna – Jun 2, 2017

Hazmat crews have handed over an investigation to RCMP after several small, suspicious packages were found inside a storage locker at National Storage on Westlake Road in West Kelowna.

A manager called fire crews after finding the items Thursday. When fire crews arrived on scene they secured the area, evacuated the storage facility and called in the regional hazmat team.

“The materials appear to be burned or charred. There’s some discolouration,” West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund said. “These are signs we look for that we need to approach with caution.”

Upon initial inspection, hazmat team members could not identify the materials and requested RCMP.

The scene on Westlake Road has been secured as officials await RCMP hazardous materials experts.

Brolund said he believed the items posed to immediate risk to public safety.
