Peel Regional Police are searching for a male suspect after a student was stabbed following an altercation at St. Francis Xavier Secondary School in Mississauga Wednesday morning.
Police said officers responded to the scene at 11:05 a.m. and located a 15-year-old male student on school grounds with a stab wound.
Peel EMS said the student was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
St. Francis Xavier Secondary School is located on Bristol Road East near Hurontario Street just south of Matheson Boulevard West.
Police said the suspect and the stabbing victim were known to each other and both are students at the school. He was last seen wearing a black sweater and red polo shirt.
Const. Bally Saini told reporters at the scene the stabbing was an isolated incident and that authorities have surveillance video.
“We know who we’re looking for,” Saini said. “He did flee the area and officers are canvassing.”
Investigators are also speaking to witnesses and are urging anyone who may have been in the area to come forward.
St. Francis Xavier Secondary School was placed in lockdown as police attempted to search for the suspect but the measure was lifted just before noon.
“Any time there is altercation involving officers attending, we put school into lockdown or hold and secure,” Saini said.
A number of schools in the area were also placed on hold and secure as a precaution but were later lifted. Those included San Lorenzo Ruiz CES, Barondale PES, Bristol PES, Nahani Way PES, Cooksville Creek PES, Fairwind PES, St. Jude CES and Brilliant Minds Montessori schools.
