Ontario Provincial Police say four people were killed and two others were seriously injured following a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Kingston, Ont., early Thursday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 1:25 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the highway west of Joyceville Road.
Police said seven vehicles were involved in the crash including four tractor-trailers, a commercial truck and two passenger vehicles.
Police said four people were killed after the vehicle they were in caught on fire. Two others were transported to hospital with serious injuries.
“The Frontenac fire department came and worked on putting the fire out in the vehicle. Based on the investigation to date, the four people who were in the vehicle. They were deceased,” OPP Sgt. Angie Atkinson said.
“One of the person taken to hospital is a male. He was extricated from the other commercial motor vehicle. The other person is a male as well. He was taken to hospital with serious injury but I’m not certain which vehicle that he belongs to in this collision.”
Police have not released the age and identities of the crash victims.
“The coroner is currently on scene as well as our technical traffic collision investigators,” Atkinson said. “The cause of the crash will be determined as part of the investigation.”
The OPP said Highway 401 westbound at Joyceville Road reopened after 7 p.m. Thursday.
