By the Numbers

The data was organized as the rate of police-reported impaired driving incidents, by census metropolitan area (CMA), for 2015.

Saskatchewan had 575 incidents per 100,000 population, Alberta recorded 314. The city of Edmonton came in with 226 incidents compared to Calgary’s 132.

The numbers showed more people are driving impaired in rural areas compared to urban centres with a population over 100,000. More incidents of drug-impaired driving occur in the Atlantic provinces. Nearly half of all cases of impaired driving occurred on the weekends and between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Editor’s note: Calgary police could not speak to why the number of incidents in Edmonton was higher than Calgary. i.e. whether Edmonton had more resources to catch impaired drivers; a way to compare public education and awareness campaigns or whether there are simply more impaired drivers in that city.
