BC SPCA may be recommending animal cruelty charges after seizing 29 dogs and puppies from a breeder in Squamish on Wednesday.
The dogs, 18 adult dogs and 11 puppies, were badly matted and suffering from ear infections, overgrown nails, skin infections and severe dental disease.
The dogs, some of whom may be pregnant and include Old English sheepdogs, Coton de Tulear, bearded collies and a Tiberian terrier, are currently receiving ongoing veterinary treatment at the SPCA.
“This is yet another example of why regulations for dog (and cat) breeders are needed in this province,” Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA said in a written statement.
“We have been working with the B.C. government on developing laws that we hope will help avoid these types of cases in the future.”
The investigation is ongoing and currently the dogs are not available for adoption, pending the legal process.
SPCA is accepting donations to help with the cost of caring for the dogs.
