Police in Brisbane, Australia made a furry discovery after a woman handed officers a zipped canvas bag that contained a baby koala.
On Sunday, Queensland police officers stopped a woman during a routine patrol when the 50-year-old was arrested on “outstanding matters.”
Before the woman was taken to a police station, officers asked her if she had anything to declare, police said in a statement.
Police said the woman then handed over a zipped, green canvas bag telling the arresting officers it contained a baby koala.
“Not quite believing their ears, the officers cautiously un-zipped the bag and found this gorgeous boy,” police said in a statement.
Police said the woman told officers she found the little koala on Saturday night and took it into her care.
Queensland police believe the koala is about six months old and appeared to be in good health apart from being a bit dehydrated. It was sent to an animal care facility.
“He’s been on fluids but is doing well and will shortly be going out to a carer,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty in a statement. “He weighs 1.5 kg and we’ve called him Alfred.”
Koalas are protected under Australia’s Nature Conservation Act.
