Chronicle Herald halts Cape Breton Star publication amid ongoing union dispute

The Chronicle Herald announced Thursday it is stopping publication of the Cape Breton Star immediately.

The weekly community newspaper was launched in 2014. According to a written statement by the Chronicle Herald, the paper used to receive community support but “recently these circumstances have changed and the traction gained has come up against a prevailing headwind of union sympathy in industrial Cape Breton.”

Unionized employees with the Chronicle Herald have been on strike since January 23, with the two sides unable to reach a contract agreement. The union has said the company was looking to make 1,200 changes to their contract, which would effectively bust their union.
