Montreal firefighters called to battle blaze on St. Lawrence River

MONTREAL – Montreal firefighters were called in to assist the Longueuil fire department at the scene of an unusual fire Saturday afternoon.

According to Michel Girard, a spokeperson for the Montreal fire department, it was around 12:30 p.m. when their help was requested on the St. Lawrence River, to put out a blaze on a small boat.

Girard said that the boat had been burning for a while before they were called.

There was no one on board when they arrived on scene.

Longueuil police told Global News that three people had previously been rescued by a passing boat. The trio was taken to the marina in Old Longueuil and police said there were no reports of injury.

The cause of the fire is not known.

Girard said the drifting boat eventually sank and the cause of the blaze may never be known.
