Toronto police are looking for two suspects after a 21-year-old man was shot dead in an “ambush-style attack” in Scarborough.
Homicide squad Det. Paul Worden said Kevaughn Morgan was walking near Lawrence Avenue East and Brimley Road around 10 p.m. Thursday when a gunman suddenly approached and shot him.
“The shooter was lying in wait for the deceased and began shooting without warning,” Worden told reporters Friday. Witnesses heard two to five shots and Morgan was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Worden said the shots came from an adjacent parkette area in what he called a “cowardly attack” in a quiet residential neighbourhood.
“It could have even been worse if other members of the community had been struck by the fired shots.”
Worden said it’s believed the “ambush-style attack” was targeted, with the gunman and a second suspect then taking off on foot.
He said police don’t have a motive yet but believe Morgan’s friends may know what led to the shooting.
They’re encouraged to contact police, while anyone in the area who has surveillance cameras on their houses are being asked to check their footage from 9:45 to 10:15 p.m. for possible evidence.
One suspect is described as a black male aged 20-25, 6 feet tall with a thin to medium build and short hair. He was wearing a grey and white striped shirt, white running shoes, and grey or light-coloured track pants, which Worden said were falling off him as he ran away.
Police do not yet have a description of the second suspect.
An autopsy on Morgan was scheduled for Friday, Worden said. His death is the city’s 39th homicide this year.
