‘Extreme’ hikers take on Grouse Grind

Records fell and some determined people are very sore after the third annual Multi-Grouse Grind Challenge.

If you think Grouse Grind is tough, try doing it multiple times from dawn to dusk.

A record 37 athletes signed up for the event.

The challenge tests a hiker on the number of times they can tackle the trail in a single day, which happens to be the longest day of the year.

Ian Robertson completed 16 trips up the steep 2.9 kilometer long Grind.

He broke the 2014 record of 15 set by 69 year old Idar Karlsen.

Andrea Johb also did 15, which is the new record for women.

The challenge started at 4 a.m. and the hikers, or at least some of them, kept going past 10 p.m.

Grind participant Atessa Marashi said, “I wasn’t sure I would do it again but its for a good cause and after a year you forget how much pain you were in.

The event raised over $21,000 toward the Grind For Kids campaign in support of BC Children’s Hospital.
