Police believe the suspect broke in through a child’s unlocked bedroom window, and walked through the room to get to the rest of the house. An elementary school-aged child was asleep in the room at the time.

The Rundleridge Drive N.E. resident was alerted to the intruder by the barking of the family’s dog. The suspect fled when confronted with the resident.

Police are asking for public help to identify the suspect, described as about 6’0″ tall with a medium build and dark hair.
“He was wearing a white golf shirt, potentially with thin black stripes and khaki shorts,” police said in a release Thursday.  “He was seen leaving the area on a mountain bike.”

Police provided the following tips to prevent break and enters as well as thefts:

  • Despite the warm weather, it is important to ensure windows and doors are secured at all times, even when you’re home. Culprits need mere moments to commit a theft or break in.
  • Always lock vehicle, garage and house doors, even if you are nearby or only leaving for a short period of time. It may help to establish a routine where you check all doors and windows before leaving your home or going to bed.
  • Don’t leave vehicles unattended with the keys inside, and make sure spare keys are kept in a secure location not in or around your vehicle.
  • Hide or remove valuables, including garage door openers, from your vehicle so that they are not visible to people walking by.
  • Secure your vehicle if you need to leave it running by either locking the doors or use a steering wheel lock so it cannot be driven easily.
