Edmonton police reveal identity of man killed in north end shooting

Police have released the identity of a man shot and killed in a northeast Edmonton neighbourhood Friday evening.

Gherezghiher (Gary) Yemane died from multiple gunshot wounds, police said Tuesday afternoon. The 63-year-old man was found lying on the ground surrounded by blood near Ozerna Road, between 69 Street and 165 Avenue, at around 8:45 p.m.

Police are still investigating to determine if the shooting was random or targeted. Yemane was not known to police

“The information we have from Yemane’s family indicates he was very involved in his community,” Staff Sgt. Bill Clark with the EPS Homicide Section said.

“Our investigators are working on multiple angles to determine what led to this tragic event and we’re asking the public for help.”

Police are searching for a black, older sedan that was seen leaving the area of Ozerna Road at the time of Friday’s shooting.

Yemane is Edmonton’s 23rd homicide victim of 2016.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
