Residents concerned over future of Rutherford Park, slated to be turned into a sports complex

MONTREAL — Residents living near McGill University are worried about a possible plan to turn Rutherford Park, on Doctor Penfield Avenue and McTavish Street, into a sports complex.

The Friends of Rutherford Park group argues it wants the park, situated just south of Mount Royal, to remain a public space.

The City of Montreal unveiled plans to develop the park, also known as McTavish, into a sports facility back in 2014.

Representatives argued there is a great need for recreational facilities in the downtown Montreal area.

McGill University was slated to contribute about $1 million to the project, which is why residents worry the public space will only be open to McGill students on weekdays.

 

There is no definite timetable for the project’s completion, but it was originally supposed to be done in time for the city’s 375th anniversary.
