Students host mock council meeting to experience democracy in action

LAVAL – High school students from the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board got a valuable lesson in democracy Wednesday.

The students from Laval Junior Academy were treated to a mock council meeting, where they experienced democracy in action.

According to the school board, events like these helps student become active members of society once they leave high school.

“We want students to learn the value of democracy,” explained Jennifer Maccarone, the school board’s chairperson.

Students prepared for the event for two weeks.

The topic they debated was the merits of school transportation: should students take school buses or city buses?

Parents and students gathered at the school board offices in Rosemère to watch the meeting.

This was the first time the school board has held a mock council.
