Edmonton hate crimes officers search for suspect in aggravated assault of 2 men

EDMONTON – Edmonton police are searching for a man who verbally and physically assaulted an openly gay man and his brother near Kingsway Mall last month.

At around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, the brothers were approached by an unknown man at the transit station near the north Edmonton mall.

The suspect started to berate one of the brothers who police said identifies as openly gay. Police said the suspect yelled derogatory terms related to the man’s sexuality.

The brothers were then assaulted. They both suffered serious injuries in the attack. Police and EMS crews were called to the scene by witnesses. The men were treated and taken to hospital.

The male suspect left the scene and boarded a transit bus.
