Four firefighters suffer burns in massive Winnipeg fire

WINNIPEG – Four firefighters were injured in a large fire that badly damaged several buildings in the Wolseley area.

The fire broke out in the early morning hours on Saturday at a condo construction site on Maryland St.

Four firefighters were taken to hospital in stable condition with burn injuries, according to a tweet from the Alex Forrest, president of the United Firefighters of Winnipeg.

Two people were also taken to hospital in stable condition.

The fire spread to two other buildings on the northwest corner of Maryland St. and Westminster Ave.

When firefighters got to the scene, the fire was so hot that traffic signals were beginning to melt in the intersection.

Residents in homes nearby were also evacuated as a precaution.

At this time it’s unclear how the fire started or how much damage it caused.

The Winnipeg Police Arson Unit is investigating.
