RED DEER, Alta. – The Alberta government is spending about $800,000 to improve air- quality monitoring in the Red Deer area.
A national study last fall found particulate levels in the region exceeded federal guidelines.

The levels weren’t considered to be health threats, but environment minister Shannon Phillips promised quick action at the time.

The money will allow for a new monitoring station in Red Deer and a more detailed analysis of particles in the air.
Fine particulates are thought to come from industrial sources, coal-fired power generation and vehicles.
