It was a three year battle but a 12-year-old Saanich girl, who took on city hall, has won.
Jillian McCue has been wanting to keep her miniature goats as pets in her backyard but unfortunately the city would not allow it.
On Monday, Saanich City Council unanimously gave the go-ahead to an 18-month pilot project allowing up to 10 people in the municipality to raise the animals.
The stipulations include having the goats vaccinated, dehorned and their hooves trimmed regularly.
Neighbours as far away as 50 metres must also give their permission. The distance was lessened from 100 metres, thanks in large part to McCue, who said the longer distance was a little over the top.
McCue expects to have her two new pets within the next three months.
“The two goats I’m going to be getting are in North Saanich and their names are Millie and Ivy. They are just so cute and I just love them.”
When the pilot project wraps in 2018, the city will initiate a larger public-engagement process.
