Amber Alert cancelled and allegedly abducted girl hospitalized after crash

An Amber Alert has been cancelled after a four-year-old girl allegedly abducted in the middle of the night was found and her father arrested when the vehicle they were in crashed outside Ottawa following a police chase.

Police allege the child was taken around 4:20 a.m. Monday when Mario Rodrigues broke in through a window at his ex-wife’s house in Aurora, north of Toronto, and then fled in a minivan. The alert went out around five hours later.

Ontario Provincial Police said officers in the Upper Ottawa Valley area later spotted the vehicle driving aggressively at high speeds and attempted to stop it before cutting off their pursuit.

Not long after the van failed to take a turn and rolled over in Pembroke, about 150 kilometres northwest of Ottawa, said police watchdog the Special Investigations Unit, which is investigating the collision.

OPP Const. Shawn Peever told reporters at the scene the girl and Rodrigues were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Ornge air ambulance service said it transferred the child in stable condition from Pembroke Regional Hospital to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa.

The SIU investigates police-involved incidents where someone has been seriously injured or dies.

Thirty-five-year-old Rodrigues, of Toronto, has been arrested. There’s no word yet on charges.
