Simone Sanderson homicide: Winnipeg police release information on unsolved case

WINNIPEG — Winnipeg police have released new information on a nearly four-year-old murder investigation.

Simone Sanderson was last seen on Aug. 26, 2012 in the North End of Winnipeg, just weeks after her 23rd birthday. Her lifeless body was found a week later in an empty lot at Burrows Avenue and Main Street.

She was found with upper-body injuries and covered by leaves and debris. She was wearing a black sports bra and a pink skirt.

Police have yet to identify a suspect.

It has been three and a half years since Sanderson was killed and while progress has been made, the investigation is still on-going, police told the media on Wednesday.

Police said it’s believed Sanderson was killed during the evening of Sunday Aug. 26 or during the early morning hours of Aug. 27.

“It is also believed that Simone was brought to the area where she was murdered by the suspect who was operating an older model, small-style, two door car,” said police.

The ongoing investigation has led to a male DNA profile that detectives believe will be crucial in identifying the suspect. There are also indications that the suspect returned to the crime scene in the nights following Simone’s murder.

Police said Sanderson was a sex-trade worker, something she got involved in a couple of months before her death.
