MONTREAL – Twenty residents of a three-storey apartment building on Christophe-Colomb Avenue in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough are homeless following a fire Sunday morning.
According to Chrisitan Legault, spokesperson for the Montreal fire department, the fire started in the living room of a second-storey unit shortly after 7:00 a.m.
From there, the blaze quickly spread to the third floor and then to the roof of the building.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, some of the residents were standing on their balconies to escape the fire.
A 41-year-old woman was injured when she jumped onto the balcony of an adjoining building.
She was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, to be treated for smoke inhalation and rib injuries.
It took more than 80 firefighters over two hours to control the three-alarm blaze.
While the building is not a complete loss, Legault said that damage incurred will prevent residents from returning home.
Legault told Global News that the origin of the fire appears to be accidental.
