One of Vancouver’s most historic live music venues is no more.
In a Facebook post, owners and management of the Railway Club said they were “sorry to announce the closure of the business, effective immediately.”
“A concerted and very public effort to sell the club over the last few months has seen no buyer come forward,” the statement said.
They claimed “the long-term and persistent combination of relatively high expenses, in particular rent, as compared to business receipts has left the business unable to continue.”
The Railway Club, located on the corner of Dunsmuir and Pender streets, has long been a hub for up-and-coming artists and established music acts alike. Artists like Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, Barenaked Ladies, k.d. lang, Spirit of the West and Sarah McLachlan have graced the Railway Club’s stage over the years.
The venue opened in 1931 and, as its name suggests, originally served as a private club for railway workers employed at the nearby CPR Station.
