Fraser Health is warning anyone who may have consumed raw ground beef products from a Chilliwack butcher shop.
It says raw lean and extra-lean ground beef produced and sold between March 5 and 8 from Fraser Valley Meats may be contaminated with E. coli.
A sample of raw ground beef collected from Fraser Valley Meats tested positive for E. coli O103.
This type of E. coli infection can cause bloody diarrhea and kidney failure. No illnesses have been reported so far.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the infection.
Fraser Valley Meats has offered a voluntary recall for the affected products.
Fraser Health says there were no food safety issues with the process in which the products were being prepared. It says the products were prepared using methods that meet food safety standards.
The ground beef in question was only sold at Fraser Valley Meats in Chilliwack and was not distributed to other retail outlets. If consumers have bought ground beef directly from Fraser Valley Meats between March 5 and 8, they are asked to return the meat to Fraser Valley Meats or discard it.
