REGINA – Two family cats died in a destructive fire at a condo complex in the city’s east end late Sunday night.
At around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night crews were called to the complex at 3750 7th Ave. E.
Officials say one complex of three units was completely destroyed and two neighbouring complexes were evacuated as a precaution.
“All three individual condo units were damaged beyond repair,” Randy Ryba, Regina Fire and Protective Services (RPS) Fire Marshal, said.
“Some personal belongings will be salvaged.”
After completing an investigation, Regina Fire and Protective Services (RPS) said the fire started on the rear patio due to careless disposal of smoker’s material.
The fire went up the exterior and into the attic of the complex before it was extinguished.
No individuals were injured in the fire.
RPS is now reminding residents to put smoking materials in non-combustible containers, instead of flower pots, plastic containers or planters.
“Even a tin can with a little bit of sand on the bottom can go a long way versus containers that are non-combustible,” Ryba said.
