Autopsy to be performed after human remains discovered near Barrie, Ont.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday after a passerby found human remains in a wooded area of Simcoe County Forest north of Toronto on Wednesday.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a citizen was walking in the area of Springwater Township with their dog just before noon and contacted authorities.

“They discovered what they believed to be human remains and they immediately contacted the OPP,” said Sgt. Peter Leon.

A coroner was brought on scene and confirmed the discovery was indeed human remains which authorities say is expected to be removed on Thursday.

“There’s a great deal of snow and ice on the ground…may impact removal of remains,” said Leon.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled at the Office of the Chief Coroner in Toronto on Friday.

Authorities say there will be a continued police presence in the area for the investigation.

Police are asking the public to avoid Simcoe County Forest east of Gill Road and south of Hillview Crescent for the time being.
