LETHBRIDGE – Brooklyn Watmough is a busy 12-year-old figure skater with the Lethbridge Skating Club and on Saturday, she got the chance to show off her skills along with some other athletes at the club’s annual Ice Show.

“The theme of our carnival is ‘Musicals on Ice’ and all of the programs are musicals from the 1950s to the 2000s,” Watmough said. “All the levels get their own programs, and solos and step outs and we just go out and skate and do our best.”

Watmough spends over eight hours a week on the ice practising on her own as well as in a synchronized skating team. She said although she spends so much time in the rink, she never gets tired of it.

“It’s always challenging you. You’re always going through jumps and new spins and you’re always building,” Watmough said. “It makes me really strong and it’s really fun!”

Brooklyn’s mom Sherry spends just as much time at the hockey arena as Brooklyn, and said their time together has built a special bond between them.

“I enjoy being at the rink otherwise I wouldn’t [be here],” Sherry said. “I don’t have to sit there and watch my daughter but she actually asks me to come and watch.”

Brooklyn said even though it’s a tough sport to start, she thinks everyone should give it a try.

“It’s challenging at the start. You’ve got to get your balance right and when you first start, it’s hard because you don’t know where to start,” Brooklyn said. “But once you get going, it’s really fun.”

After years of practise on the ice, Sherry said she will continue to support Brooklyn wherever she chooses to take her skills in skating.

“I just sit at the arena and I support her and cheer her on,” Sherry said. “If this is what she loves to do, that’s what she’s going to do, and I’m going to be behind her.”
