MONTREAL – Former Côte-Saint-Luc mayor Anthony Housefather may have been passed over for a spot in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s cabinet, but he now has another important job.
The Mount Royal MP was elected chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
“I’m thrilled that my parliamentary colleagues have entrusted me with this important position,” said Housefather in a statement.
“Our government has laid out ambitious priorities that will require close collaboration and meaningful engagement with MPs of all political stripes and we, as members of the Justice Committee, must be accountable to all Canadians in this regard.”
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights has the power to review and report on the policies, programs and expenditure plans of the Justice Department.

Housefather’s committee will also oversee the Supreme Court of Canada and the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
