SASKATOON – Police chiefs in Alberta are pushing their province to adopt a law that would require driver to prepay for their gas. The goal is to protect service workers.
The resolution came up following last year’s death of a Calgary service-station worker who was run over during a gas theft.
British Columbia has had pay-before-you-pump legislation since 2008, with dramatic results. Vancouver alone saw the number of reported gas-and-dash robberies go from 161 in 2007 to 15 in 2008, with only one case reported between 2009 and 2012.
