She was spending the day with her son and wanted to grab a snack to nibble on.

“I opened the bag and started nibbling at my mulberries and just casually looking at them only to realize there was more than just mulberries,” said the resident, who requested to stay anonymous.

Among her treat were a few wriggling maggots, she said.

“I was mortified and knew the store had not checked their products carefully or wash out their bins,” she told Global News.

“I ate some right out of the bag when I left the store with my son.”

The resident said she marched back to the store and demanded to speak to the manager.

“He seemed surprised and very apologetic. He called a worker to have the rest of the product removed from the floor,” she said.

She contacted Bulk Barn’s head office, and was told the case would be investigated.

All the same, she said Bulk Barn has lost a customer.

“I will buy my mulberries at the health food store where it is packed separately,” she said.

“But for now, I’m on a mulberry break.”

Bulk Barn wrote to Global News to state: “We have pulled the product off the sales floor across all our stores and we are currently investigating the matter.”
