UPDATE: Suspect in custody after student stabbed at Emily Carr University

A 24-year-old man is in custody after a student was stabbed in the face at Emily Carr University Wednesday evening.

It happened inside a building at 1399 Johnson Street around 5:30 p.m., according to Vancouver Police.

The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries, but the suspect fled before police arrived.

He turned himself in this morning and is facing a charge of assault and weapons related offences.

Police say the suspect and victim are known to each other and the stabbing appears to be the result of an ongoing dispute between the two men.

The university cancelled classes on Thursday “to deal with this situation in a systematic way.”

“Emily Carr University strives to provide a safe environment for all students, faculty and staff,” said the university in a statement released Thursday night. “There have been no incidents of violence on our campus in recent history and student safety is of utmost importance.”
