Victoria Police Department investigating sudden death of a toddler

A young child suddenly died in a Victoria hotel today and officers are investigating the circumstances of the death.

It happened at Hotel Zed on Douglas Street around 4 a.m. Police received reports that a woman was screaming inside one of the hotel rooms.

When police arrived, they had to force entry into the room, where they found a woman, a six-year-old, and a small toddler around 19 months old.

The toddler had no vital signs, and despite attempts by police and other emergency crews to revive him, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Victoria Police Department and Vancouver Island’s major crime unit continues to investigate at the hotel, trying to sort out the circumstances of the death.

“We don’t know if the death is going to be classified as suspicious or not,” said Cst. Mike Russell.

“Really what we’re doing now is gathering the evidence, trying to determine the cause of death…and we’ll go from there.”

The mother and six-year-old were sent to hospital, with what Russell believes was shock.

The identities of all three people have not been released by Victoria Police.
