EDMONTON — A 33-year-old man has been charged in connection with a shooting in Stettler Wednesday afternoon. Darren James Bauer was arrested in Calgary Thursday afternoon after fleeing the scene Wednesday.
RCMP and EMS crews were called to an area in northwest Stettler shortly after 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31. Police found a 37-year-old man suffering from several gunshots wounds. He was taken to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
Witnesses told police there was a two-vehicle collision before the shooting. Shots were reportedly fired and the suspect was last seen driving away in a blue Dodge pick-up truck, RCMP said in a news release Thursday.
The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Darren James Bauer. Police said he is wanted on 12 Canada-wide warrants for firearms and property offences.
Bauer was considered armed and dangerous. He was arrested in Calgary around 4:15 Thursday afternoon. Police said he was driving a stolen truck at the time of his arrest.
Bauer has since been charged with a list of offences, including:
- Possession of a restriction weapon while prohibited from doing so
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Breach of recognizance (x2)
- Possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence
- Careless use of a firearm
- Driving while unauthorized
- Possession of a drug for the purpose of trafficking
- Discharging a firearm with the intent to injure
RCMP have also charged 25-year-old Kathleen Sherry Cooper in the incident. She has been charged with the following offences:
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Breach of recognizance
Cooper was also arrested on nine outstanding charges not related to the incident in Stettler.
Police say both men involved in the shooting are known to police and this was not a random act.
Stettler is located about 80 kilometres east of Red Deer.
