University of Winnipeg history professor Janis Thiessen said on Friday that the present-day feelings on Labour Day are rooted in the 1919 general strike. “Generosity and sympathy on behalf of employers is a hopeful thought and workers can only accomplish their goals by solidarity,” she said.
