For the first time in nearly 50 years, Russia launched a rocket carrying a lunar landing craft on Thursday in a race against India to be the first to land on the moon’s south pole. The lunar south pole is a matter of fascination for scientists, who believe the permanently shadowed polar craters may contain water.
