‘I don’t belong here’: NDP MP alleges racial profiling, barriers during time in office

Members of Parliament who aren’t seeking re-election gave their official farewells to Parliament on Tuesday night, including one of the youngest members of the chamber who used her speech to highlight the barriers and lack of support she faced during her time as the NDP MP for Nunavut. Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, 27, was elected in 2019 and said during her speech that in the nearly two years since, she has repeatedly been made to feel that she does not belong. “Every time I walk onto House of Commons grounds, speak in these chambers, I am reminded every step of the way I don’t belong here,” she said.
