There is a major development in the intensifying conflict in the Middle East. In a great blow to the militant group, Hezbollah has confirmed its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah has been assassinated. Over the last three decades, Nasrallah has transformed Hezbollah into a powerful paramilitary and political force in the Middle East. He was targeted in a massive Israeli airstrike on Friday in a densely-populated area of Beirut. Multiple buildings have been levelled, streets are filled with debris and tens of thousands have been displaced. Nasrallah’s death comes during a sharp escalation of hostilities across the Middle East. U.S. President Joe Biden called it a “measure of justice for his many victims” but it remains unclear what it may mean for the widening war. Jeff Semple has more. No country is more tied to Hezbollah than Iran and all eyes are on Tehran tonight. Hezbollah was founded in the early 1980s by Iranian Revolutionary Guard members to combat Israeli forces in Lebanon. It serves as a Lebanese offshoot of the Islamic Republic, sharing similar anti-Western and anti-Israeli rhetoric. Nathanial Dove reports.
