Businesses and malls in Winnipeg are taking a cautious approach as they ease back into full occupancy limits with COVID-19-related health restrictions loosening.

New Brunswick has been a leading example during the pandemic, but expert warns about reopening too early.

"We cannot afford to get this wrong," he said. "Subsequent pandemic waves could create greater economic and social devastation than we’ve already seen."

The City of Winnipeg is taking applications for restaurants that don't usually offer patio service to put up a temporary space and resume business as the COVID-19 crisis eases.

Federal and provincial authorities said 2,859 people had died from the virus by 6 p.m. ET, adding that 19,198 had recovered.

As of April 27, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the country will move to ease its strict work restrictions that will see businesses and schools reopened.
