As health officials work to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus, the pandemic reached yet another grim milestone on Wednesday, with the virus now having infected more than 40,000 people in Canada.

There is mounting political pressure on governors and municipal officials -- even in hard-hit New York state, where more than 20,000 people have died -- to rouse the dormant U.S. economy.

Pediatricians across Canada have noticed a drastic drop in emergency room visits, and some hospitals report that those who do come have more advanced symptoms than normal.
