The airline says the aircraft have no passengers, but instead are carrying time-sensitive shipments, including medical supplies.

Air Canada is laying off more than 5,100 flight attendants and suspending most of its routes abroad by the end of the month.

The announcement came hours after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada and the U.S. had mutually agreed to close their shared border to non-essential traffic.
