A total of $1.4 billion has been set aside by the provincial government for the construction of Calgary's ring road.

"Detours will be in place for travellers in the area. Motorists should plan ahead and consider alternate routes, such as Deerfoot Trail or 37 Street S.W. in the southwest," the province said in a news release Friday.

Initial planning for Calgary ring road began in the 1970s.
