SASKATOON – A joint effort between three parties has put 51 affordable rental units on the market in Saskatoon.
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan along with Cress Housing Corporation teamed up to repair the units at three properties in the city.
The vacant buildings, located at 1705 and 1709 22nd Street and at 1911 7th Street East, underwent renovations valued at $1.5 million to make them habitable.
Both levels of government jointly contributed $1.2 million to the project with the remainder coming from Cress in the form of cash equity.
“The ongoing need for good, affordable homes in Saskatoon certainly reflects the need for further investment,” said Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) Chief Felix Thomas.
“These apartment blocks are quality units that show our capacity to create and operate much needed affordable housing options in the city.”
Both the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments said the units will help improve the quality of life for aboriginals and support demands for affordable housing in the city.
“Our goal is to help individuals and families in most housing needs, and I am pleased that the rejuvenation of these rental properties supports that,” said Social Services Minister June Draude.
“We know that maintaining our existing stock of rental properties is necessary in order to meet the growing housing needs in this province.”
Repairs to the buildings included installing new boilers, intercom and security cameras, fire alarm systems, roof repairs, window replacement and upgrades to the suites.
Cress Housing, the affordable housing arm of the STC, operates a number of buildings in the city, most of which are alcohol and drug free and registered as crime-free multi-housing with Saskatoon police.
