SASKATOON – A Saskatoon man who defrauded dozens of people in a Kijiji rental scam will spend 12 months behind bars after pleading guilty to 33 counts of fraud.

Jason Hartlen took thousands of dollars in damage deposits from people after posting a fake rental ad on Kijiji for an apartment in the 800-block of Kingsmere Boulevard.

The 33-year-old was arrested in Regina in May after fleeing Saskatoon.

Along with the jail time, Hartlen has been ordered to pay more than $80,000 in restitution to the victims.

Police have said there are also warrants for him in B.C. and Alberta for similar scams.

During Vancouver’s 2010 Olympics, police allege he received $8,000 from the parents of an athlete to rent a house during the games. Police said he was gone with the money by the time the renters showed up.
