TORONTO – Several snow squalls continue to blow across parts of southern Ontario causing dangerous driving conditions for motorists.
Environment Canada issued a snow squall warning for Barrie, Orillia, Dufferin, Elgin, Huron, London and Sarnia.
Snow squall watches are up for Grey, Waterloo, as well as northern York Region.
Earlier, Environment Canada had issued a special weather statement warning the GTA warning of quick accumulations of snow as a cold front blows through.
WATCH: Police say that commuters need to drive slower during winter conditions
On Hwy. 400, the squalls severely diminished visibility which caused a 15 to 20 car pileup.
The cold front will continue to produce bands of snow southeast of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The squalls off Georgian Bay will intensify this afternoon from Barrie and Collingwood southward to Innisfil. Newmarket and Aurora may experience squalls as well.
Local amounts of 15 to 20 cm over 12 hours are possible, meeting the warning criteria for some areas. The squalls are expected to taper off later on Sunday.
Drivers are warned that the potential snowfall could lead to low visibility and that “heavy flurries may reduce visibility to near zero briefly.”
