KITCHENER, Ont. – A Kitchener, Ont., man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a woman whose body was found floating in the Grand River last summer.

Michael Ball, 22, was also charged with committing an indignity to human remains during his first court appearance Thursday in Kitchener.

He was also charged with numerous criminal offences involving firearms, weapons and controlled substances, which are unrelated to the murder charge.

The body of 28-year-old Erin Howlett of Elmira, Ont., was discovered by teenagers swimming in the river (near Riverbend Drive) in Kitchener on July 5.

Police say the cause of Howlett’s death isn’t being released at this time.
